If you've noticed lots of white-flowering trees recently and asked yourself: 'Is it cherry? Is it rose?' - only to then, up close, realise it's actually neither of those... then chances are you are probably looking at Hawthorn. (Obviously don't just take my word for it - always make sure you've positively identified any plant before picking and using it!)
In flower from May to June, Hawthorn is regarded as a heart tonic in herbal medicine. It strengthens the heart and has been found to alleviate anxiety and bring calm - which is a distinct selling point at the moment, and the reason why I like using it.
For a fortifying cuppa, simply infuse some fresh flowers in hot water - I was told by local herbalists to stew herbal teas for 15-20 minutes, so that's what I do. It can develop quite an intense taste though, so you may want to add a dollop of honey to your mug of calm.
Enjoy!
